ROADLOK® ANSWER DATABASE Answers to your burning questions! GENERAL QUESTIONS | KEY & LOCK QUESTIONS | UNRELATED QUESTIONS | SUBMIT YOURS | ASK THE CHIEF Q: Why do you say that a RoadLoK is not a disc lock? It's on my brake disc A: Use of the word "disc lock" is banned in our office. A disc lock, in the general sense of the term, is merely a glorified padlock a rider clamps to his rotor to prevent their motorcycle from being rolled-away. Convenience and pretty packaging aside, how is a "disc lock" different than a $3 padlock, or even a bolt and locknut for that matter? They all do the same thing--prevent your wheel from completing a rotation. But there's a problem, what happens when you forget to remove that "disc lock" or padlock or bolt before you try to ride your bike? BANG! That's the sound of hundreds in damage and maybe even a broken leg or arm. We've all seen it. Our "motorcycle locking system" is not a "disc lock". It stays on the bike. When locked it allows NO MOVEMENT. It cannot damage the bike. It cannot hurt you. Does that sound like a disc lock? Q: My disc lock has an alarm in it to remind me to take it off. Isn't that the same as your RoadLoK? A: Our RoadLoK motorcycle locking system is not electronic. It does not rely on batteries to remind you to remove it. In our laboratory testing we happened upon an interesting phenomenon: batteries tend to die. Weird, huh? So, let's say your bike is parked outside in the elements. Assuming your "alarmed disc lock" has a good seal to actually keep the batteries dry, what happens when they eventually die? BANG! That's the sound of hundreds in damage and maybe even a broken leg or arm. We've all seen it, but this time your $200+ fancy alarmed disc lock let you down the same way a $3 padlock could have. Rats. Additionally, where do you carry this fancy "alarmed disc lock" when you're riding, huh? Q: Shouldn't that yellow lanyard be longer? What if I forget to take-out the lock pin? A: Our yellow lanyard is for advertising purposes only. The RoadLoK is designed to blend-in with the bike so no one notices it. Obviously you're going to forget to unlock it at some point, but then you'll find out why we went through the trouble of engineering a specific system for your make and model motorcycle--your bike will only stall-out. Most RoadLoKs are shipped without the lanyard attached to the lock pin. It's your option to use it. Again, it's bright and features our logo so interested passersby know what to ask for when they go to buy one. Q: Once the pin is inserted and locked how do I take it back out? A: Oddly, this is a very common question. Since the RoadLoK motorcycle locking system is a locking system, one needs the key to remove the lock pin thereby freeing the motorcycle. Each RoadLoK is supplied with two (2) keys making this function possible. Q: What about cutting torches or a die-grinder?
A: Simple. If someone wheels a cutting torch--along with its gas
cylinders and long, rubber lines--to the parking lot your bike is
parked-in they'll be able to cut the locking system off... along
with the fork or handle bars or anything else in the parking lot. At
this point, a chain around your wheel and a close-by light pole will
also be cut by a cutting torch. A die-grinder, despite extreme
amounts of noise and attention, will yield the same results, just
not as fast. Bottom line: no security system is the end-all. The
RoadLoK motorcycle locking system keeps your bike safe from 99.9% of
criminals. No alarm, tracking system, padlock, or even home security
system will keep your bike safe from a true professional... pending
they don't just go to the next unlocked bike--a much easier target.
With concerns like this, why would anyone lock anything ever?
Q: Are replacement keys available if I should lose the two that came with mine? A: Yes, only if you register your RoadLoK in our ReKey database upon installation. [ReKey Online] When we developed this lock mechanism with ABLOY (the lock manufacturer) we had them give us 1.5 million different key codes meaning it is very unlikely you'll come across another biker with the same key you have. Don't believe us? Ask to see the paper roll of key codes during your RoadLoK factory tour. Trust us, this is REAL security. Q: I lost my key, but I didn't register in the ReKey Program. A: That's not really a question; you're missing the proper syntax. I'll go ahead and assume... the answer I think you're looking for is: unless you happened to retain the little metal tag that came with the RoadLoK when you bought it, and you can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you are in-fact the owner of both the locked motorcycle and the RoadLoK motorcycle locking system, we will not cut a replacement key for you. Why so harsh? You wouldn't want us to cut a replacement key for someone pretending to be you, would ya? We're not in the business of helping thieves, so you're better-off registering your RoadLoK when you install it on your motorcycle. [ReKey Online] Besides, it's fun to register online! Q: Can't I just have a replacement key made by a locksmith? A: No, unless your local locksmith has a collection of stolen key blanks. Besides ABLOY in Finland, RoadLoK Security is the only holder of such key blanks. Please report locksmiths with RoadLoK-style blanks and key-cutting machines in their possession to: fraud@roadlok.com Q: My friend Jim says he can just drill-out the lock cylinder and get the pin out. Is he right? A: No. Wanna see what happens when you try to drill-out an ABLOY-powered RoadLoK? [The Video] Q: Can I order an "ABLOY Inside" sticker from you?
A: No. I don't even know why you'd want that. Q: Can the ABLOY EXEC be picked? A: No. Ask your local locksmith--he'll confirm.
Q: Your Legacy Tee says RoadLoK was founded in 1879. That's not true, is it? A: Anything published on the web is true. Order your piece of history here!
Q:
My neighbor says his Hayabusa is faster than my '68 Norton
650. Is that true? A: How many turbos do you have on that Norton? Q: Is The Chief available? A: He most certainly is.
